Dia y Noche
2022
installation view, dimensions variable
corn husks, shipping pallets, dye, paper mache, rope, wire
This installation is viewed in an outside environment in daylight and nighttime moonlight. There is a stark difference in visual and emotional response to the viewing when viewed at different times of the day. The weight of the heavy recycled wood is altered in its floating presentation. The central figure becomes La Chiva's head, a paper, and a corn husk head/ mask.
La Chiva is an exploration of what it means to embody a cattle animal meant for economic and social sustenance. Chiva/os is translated to goat. Goat meat is used for Birria in several parts of Mexico as a form of sustenance, but its body parts, horns, and bones also become tools, like water containers and commodities for tourists.
